Lot 3: A late Victorian pierced brass tilting kettle stand dated 1895
A late Victorian cast and pierced brass stand, likely intended as a hearth kettle stand or decorative trivet. The item features a square top plate with rounded corners, elaborately decorated with a pattern of pierced scrollwork and a central sunburst motif. This plate is mounted via a tilting mechanism to a turned, multi-collared pedestal stem which terminates in a stepped, circular base. Stamped into the square pivot block on the underside of the top plate are the characters 1895, PATENT, and No 702. An orange rectangular adhesive label is affixed to the upper surface of the pierced plate.
Condition report:
The stand exhibits significant surface oxidation and a darkened patina consistent with age, notably within the recessed areas of the pierced decoration (photo 1). There is an accumulation of white residue, likely historic metal polish, caught in the decorative motifs (photo 2). The tilting mechanism shows signs of wear and repair; the pivot block has an open aperture where a pin appears to be missing, and the tension spring is currently misaligned (photo 2). General surface scratches and minor indentations are visible across the metalwork, commensurate with domestic use.
