Lot 559: An Early 20th-Century Oak Double-Pedestal Roll-Top Desk
An early 20th-century double-pedestal desk constructed from oak. The desk features a central S-curve tambour roll-top shutter which retracts to reveal a fitted interior containing multiple stationery pigeonholes and small storage compartments. The twin pedestals each contain four graduated drawers, for a total of eight, all of which are fitted with carved wooden pull handles. A brass lock escutcheon is centrally mounted on the lower rail of the tambour front. The desk is built with a panelled construction to the sides and rear.
Condition report:
The desk is in used, vintage condition with significant signs of wear. There is notable scuffing, scratching, and finish loss across the top surface and side panels. The carved wooden drawer handles show heavy wear and loss of original finish, appearing lighter in colour than the drawer fronts. The tambour slats appear intact, though their mechanical sliding operation is untested. Two small white adhesive labels are present on the exterior: one on the tambour rail and one on the right-hand pedestal base. General nicks, knocks, and edge wear consistent with heavy office use are present throughout.
