Lot 316: Thomas Bush Hardy (British, 1842-1897), Sailing Vessels in a Misty Estuary, Watercolour
A maritime watercolour on paper depicting several sailing vessels and coastal barges at anchor in calm, misty waters under a pale sun. The work is rendered in a tonalist style, utilising a muted palette of ochres, greys, and soft blues to capture the atmospheric light and reflections on the water surface. Signed T. B. Hardy to the lower right. The painting is presented in a cream-coloured double mount and a gilt-finished wooden frame.
Condition report:
The paper shows visible signs of age-related toning and browning across the surface. There is scattered light foxing present, most notably in the upper sky portion. The mount has some minor surface marks. The gilt frame displays small nicks, light scratches, and general wear consistent with age and handling.
