Lot 185b: A Pair of Antique Cast Iron Charcoal Box Irons including a Shepard's America Model
A pair of antique heavyweight cast iron charcoal-burning box irons. One iron features a decoratively embossed lid with the maker’s mark SHEPARD’S to the upper arc and AMERICA to the lower arc. The centre features a Maltese cross embossed with the letters N, E, W, and Y. This example includes a rear-mounted exhaust flue and integrated side vents, topped with a red-painted turned wooden handle. The second iron is finished in black with a matching black-painted turned wooden handle, featuring a front-mounted latch and a series of scalloped ventilation holes along the lower edge of the base. Both items are designed to hold hot coals within the internal chamber to heat the soleplate.
Condition report:
Both irons show evidence of age and use, including overall surface oxidation and pitting to the cast iron. There is significant wear and paint loss to the turned wooden handles. Both irons have non-original adhesive price labels attached to the bodies.
