Lot 185c: A Collection of Vintage Sheffield Steel Woodworking Chisels and Gouges including Marples
A collection of vintage woodworking edge tools comprising a variety of bench chisels and gouges. The blades are constructed from steel, with several examples featuring stamped marks including MARPLES SHEFFIELD and SHEFFIELD. The assortment contains both flat-edge chisels and curved-edge gouges of various widths. The tools are fitted with turned wooden handles, primarily in boxwood and dark-stained timber. Many examples include steel ferrules at the bolster, while several handles are reinforced with steel hoops at the striking end, identifying them as firmer chisels intended for heavy-duty use with a mallet. The lot is presented in a cardboard box with a shipping label indicating provenance from Newland, Cumbria.
Condition report:
The tools are in used workshop condition. All items show varying degrees of surface oxidation, light rust, and pitting on the steel blades. The cutting edges are dull, and several gouges exhibit nicks. The wooden handles show evidence of scuffs, grime, and minor splitting or impact damage at the striking ends consistent with age and use. Restoration, including cleaning, regrinding, and honing, will be required for professional use.
