Lot 185: Arts and Crafts Carved Wood Horizontal Wall Barometer and Thermometer
An early 20th-century Arts and Crafts wall-mounted weather station of horizontal rectangular form. The wooden case, likely oak with a dark stain, features pierced and curved terminals at either end. The facade is decorated with incised linear geometric patterns and inset circular medallions featuring a repeating three-lobed floral design. To the right is an aneroid barometer with a circular cream-coloured dial displaying weather conditions including Stormy, RAIN, Change, FAIR, and Very Dry. It is fitted with a black steel indicator needle and a brass setting pointer. To the left is a centrally mounted spirit-filled thermometer on a white ceramic scale, marked for degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit. No manufacturer marks are visible.
Condition report:
The wooden case exhibits surface wear, scuffing, and scratches consistent with age and use. There is a significant crack in the glass cover of the barometer dial. The thermometer column shows signs of separation or a break in the liquid. The item has an accumulation of surface dust and grime. The mechanical operation of the barometer movement is untested.
