A collection of large-format volumes featuring a limited edition copy of Oliver Cromwell by Samuel Rawson Gardiner, published by Goupil & Co. in 1899. This work is one of 1,475 copies printed on fine paper, this being number 1247. The collection also includes bound volumes of The Studio fine art magazine from the period of circa 1899-1900, containing illustrated articles on contemporary artists such as John Singer Sargent. The volumes are bound in quarter-leather with cloth or marbled paper-covered boards, featuring gilt-tooled spines with raised bands and marbled endpapers. The Oliver Cromwell volume includes high-quality photogravure plates typical of Goupil & Co. productions. Provenance is indicated by the presence of decorative bookplates for the Oldham Free Public Libraries Reference Library, along with handwritten classification markings and library stamps.
Condition report:
The collection is in fair to poor condition. The bindings show significant deterioration, with heavy rubbing, scuffing, and loss to the leather on the spines, particularly at the joints, heads, and tails. The boards exhibit corner wear and surface soiling. Internally, there is evidence of foxing and spotting to the pages, though the text and illustrations remain largely clear and legible. Ex-library markings are present throughout, including bookplates, ink stamps, and handwritten annotations.
