Masterpieces of Industrial Art and Sculpture at the International Exhibition 1862, edited by John Burley Waring and published by Day & Son, London, circa 1863. This large folio work is a premier example of Victorian chromolithography, documenting the decorative arts showcased at the 1862 International Exhibition. The volume is bound in the publisher’s deluxe maroon morocco leather, featuring elaborate gilt and black stamped architectural and floral motifs. The front board is designed with a central title oval and four corner medallions representing Asia, America, Europe, and Africa. The work is notable for its numerous high-quality colour chromolithographic plates produced by the firm Day & Son, Lithographers to the Queen. Included among the plates are Plate 23, depicting a stained and painted glass window by Bertini of Milan, and Plate 77, showcasing decorative earthenware by the Marquis Ginori of Florence. Each plate is accompanied by descriptive text detailing the manufacturer and the nature of the object.
Condition report:
The binding shows significant signs of wear and age-related deterioration. There is heavy abrasion to the extremities, with the leather worn through to the underlying boards at the corners and along several sections of the edges. The boards exhibit surface scuffing and small areas of leather loss. Two modern adhesive auction lot stickers are present on the upper right corner of the front board. Internally, the plates appear to be in good condition, remaining bright and clean with only minor age-related toning visible in the margins.
