Lot 258: A Large Atmospheric Landscape Watercolor Depicting a Mountainous Glacial Scene
A large-format landscape watercolor painting on paper, possibly featuring gouache highlights, executed in a monochromatic palette of blues, greys, and whites. The composition depicts a stark, jagged mountain peak reflected in the calm, pale surface of a glacial valley or body of water. The work is rendered with broad, atmospheric washes that capture the play of light and shadow across the ice and rock faces. No artist signature or inscription is visible on the exposed portion of the paper. The painting is presented behind glazing within a dark wood frame featuring a gold-tone inner fillet and a wide black mount. A rectangular orange adhesive label with handwritten numbers is present on the lower-left corner of the glazing, and a white rectangular label with the numbers 10 10 is located below the frame. No other marks, labels, or inscriptions are visible.
Condition report:
The artwork appears to be in good overall condition. The paper shows no visible signs of foxing, staining, or water damage, though it has not been examined outside of the frame. There is a slight rippling to the paper consistent with the application of wet media. The frame shows some light scuffing and dust accumulation, and there is a visible layer of dust on the interior of the glazing (photo 1). The black mount appears clean and free of significant fading.
