Lot 522: Two Sterling Silver Mounted Dressing Table Jars including a George V Example by Levi and Salaman

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

An assortment of two silver-mounted vanity items comprising a large oval glass box and a smaller cylindrical jar. The oval dressing table box features a clear glass body decorated with a diamond-cut pattern and is fitted with a pull-off silver lid. The lid is heavily embossed in a Rococo style with scrolling foliate motifs, floral sprays, and a scalloped rim. While hallmarks are present on the rim of this lid, they are worn and the individual characters are not legible. The smaller cylindrical silver jar is constructed from solid sterling silver. The side of the jar body bears four distinct struck hallmarks in rectangular shields: a maker’s mark consisting of the characters LD and S in a quatrefoil shield, a lion passant, an anchor, and a lowercase Roman letter r. These marks identify the piece as sterling silver (.925 fineness), assayed in Birmingham in 1916, produced by the firm Levi and Salaman.

Condition report:

The oval glass box appears to be in good order with no visible chips or cracks to the diamond-cut body (photo 1). The silver lid shows surface tarnishing and softening to the embossed detail through polishing wear (photo 1). The circular jar shows heavy surface oxidation, fire scale, and significant tarnishing across the exterior body and lid (photo 2). There are light surface scratches and minor abrasions consistent with age and use visible on both pieces.
