A large two-part display cabinet or bookcase constructed from mahogany with a rich reddish-brown polished finish. The upper section features a pair of doors set with large clear glass panels held by wooden glazing beads. The top is surmounted by a stepped cornice with a dentil-moulded frieze. The interior is fitted with a system of notched wooden uprights designed to accommodate adjustable shelving; several loose wooden shelves are located within the unit. The doors are hung on internal brass hinges and feature a central brass-lined keyhole to the meeting rail for a mortise lock. The back of the cabinet is constructed from natural wood tongue-and-groove boarding. The lower section consists of a matching plinth base, which is shown detached and resting atop the upper unit in the primary photograph. A small white rectangular label is visible on the interior left-hand side of the upper door frame, however, the text upon it is not legible.
Condition report:
The cabinet is currently stored in two separate parts, with the plinth base detached from the main body. Several small chips are visible to the dentil moulding on the left side of the cornice (photo 1). The exterior polished surfaces show scattered scuffs, light scratches, and wear consistent with age and use, particularly along the lower edges and corners of the door frames. There is a visible build-up of dust and debris to the interior floor and shelves. The wooden backboards exhibit minor gaps between the planks due to natural wood shrinkage.
