Lot 470: A Mahogany Pedestal Drop Leaf Dining Table and a Set of Four Side Chairs
A dining suite comprising a mahogany drop-leaf table and a set of matching side chairs. The table is constructed with a veneered mahogany top featuring a crossbanded border and two D-shaped leaves with rounded corners. The top is supported by a central pedestal column resting on four splayed sabre legs, which terminate in brass lion-paw caps on integrated casters. The leaves are supported by swing-out wooden brackets. The set of four mahogany side chairs features openwork backs with pierced splats in an interlaced ribbon and yoke design. Each chair stands on square-cut front legs joined by an H-shaped stretcher system. The seats are upholstered in a cream and rose-coloured striped fabric decorated with small floral sprig motifs. No maker’s marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the surfaces of the table or chairs in the provided images.
Condition report:
The furniture set exhibits signs of moderate wear consistent with age and domestic use. The table top shows scattered surface scratches, small nicks to the veneer edges, and areas of clouding and finish fading, particularly visible on the drop-leaf sections (photo 1). The brass-capped feet show surface tarnishing and oxidation (photo 1). The chair frames appear structurally sound, though the mahogany finish shows light scuffing to the legs and stretchers. The upholstery on the chair seats shows light surface staining and wear, particularly concentrated along the front and side edges of the seat cushions (photo 2).
