Lot 458: A Mid-20th Century Oak Haberdashery Shop Counter Chest
A mid-20th century haberdashery shop or retail display chest of drawers. The unit is constructed from wood, likely oak or beech, featuring a darker stained finish to the exterior carcass. The chest contains sixteen drawers arranged in a four-by-four grid. Each drawer is of simple box construction with lighter wood sides and bases. The drawer fronts are designed with inset glass panels for the display of contents, and each is fitted with a single brass-toned metal pull bar spanning the entire top edge of the drawer front. No maker’s marks, labels, or stamps are visible on the interior or exterior of the piece.
Condition report:
The chest shows significant overall wear consistent with industrial or retail use. There is a heavy accumulation of dust and grime throughout the unit, particularly visible on the glass panels and drawer interiors (photo 1). The wooden finish on the top and sides is worn, showing numerous scuffs, scratches, and areas of finish loss (photo 1). One drawer in the second row is missing its glass front panel and the corresponding metal pull bar (photo 1). Some glass panels show surface scratching and residue. The drawer fronts exhibit localized wear and small chips to the wooden frames (photo 2).
