A late 19th or early 20th-century portable sewing machine cover constructed from bentwood oak veneer. The case features a distinctive domed lid with horizontal graining and flat vertical end panels. It is equipped with a dark-stained, turned wooden handle mounted via ornate cast-iron brackets. The exterior includes a small orange adhesive price label reading 391. The construction utilises a curved ply or veneer technique typical of late Victorian and Edwardian sewing machine accessories.
Condition report:
The case displays signs of age and significant use. There is visible surface abrasion and loss to the wood stain across the domed surface. The bentwood veneer shows minor lifting and small losses along the lower edges and corners. The metal brackets for the handle exhibit oxidation and surface wear; the handle is currently secured by a piece of non-original twine looped through the brackets. No further structural damage is visible from the provided photograph.
