Lot 335: Polished Banded Stone Ovoid Vessel

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A small barrel-shaped or ovoid vessel turned from a solid block of natural banded stone, possibly petrified wood or jasper. The material exhibits distinct horizontal sedimentary layers in a palette of cream, beige, and tan, interspersed with darker brown dendritic or branch-like inclusions. The interior walls show circular tool marks consistent with a boring or lathe-turning manufacturing process. The exterior is polished to a smooth finish, while the rim tapers slightly inwards. The vessel features an orange rectangular adhesive label on the exterior surface reading 335 in handwritten ink. No maker’s marks, signatures, or factory stamps are visible on the interior or exterior of the piece.

Condition report:

The vessel is in poor condition with significant structural damage visible across the body. An extensive network of cracks and fractures runs through the upper half and rim (photo 1). Several areas indicate previous repair attempts where fractured sections have been reattached, leaving visible adhesive residue and filler in the joints (photo 2). There are multiple small losses and chips along the primary fracture lines and around the rim circumference (photo 1).
