Lot 256: W Heaton Cooper Alpine Landscape with Coniferous Trees and Lake Watercolour and Gouache
W Heaton Cooper horizontal mountain landscape executed in watercolour and gouache on paper. The composition depicts a tranquil scene with a still body of water in the middle ground, flanked by steep, hazy blue mountains. The foreground features a grassy bank rendered with textured washes of green and yellow, punctuated by silhouetted coniferous trees and low-lying shrubs. The sky is composed of soft, broad blue and white washes. The work utilizes a combination of transparent watercolour for atmospheric effects in the distance and more opaque gouache for the detailed textures of the foreground foliage and earth. No signature, maker name, or inscription is visible on the front of the work. The piece is presented behind glass in a dark wood frame with a black and gilt-edged mount.
Condition report:
The paper shows visible signs of light-toning across the surface (photo 1). The pigments appear relatively stable, though some minor fading may be present due to the nature of the medium. The dark wood frame has visible scuffing and surface wear along the edges and corners (photo 1). There is a significant amount of dust and minor debris settled under the glass (photo 1). Heavy glare and reflections on the glazing are present in the primary photograph, partially obscuring the lower left and central portions of the image.
