A collection of assorted textiles featuring African motifs and traditional craft techniques. The group includes a variety of materials and construction styles. One piece is a printed cotton fabric with an orange and black pinstripe ground, decorated with a repeating motif of stylized blue and white avian shapes. A large cream-coloured cotton panel features hand-painted batik-style figurative scenes executed in black and terracotta pigments. The imagery includes human figures in traditional dress, including one figure in a red garment, set against a background of stylized trees and silhouettes.
Also included is a heavy, textured woven textile in reddish-brown and black, featuring a geometric, pixelated pattern. This piece has a thick, fringed edge along one side, suggesting use as a rug, wrap, or decorative throw. The lot is accompanied by a length of thick, cream-coloured twisted cordage. The printed and painted panels have unfinished, raw edges, typical of fabric remnants or traditional wraps. No maker’s marks, labels, or signatures are visible on any of the textile pieces. The cardboard box shown is a “Kapi” brand shipping container and is not part of the lot.
Condition report:
The textiles are in various states of finish, with the printed cotton and hand-painted batik panels showing raw, unfinished, and fraying edges consistent with fabric remnants (photo 1). The hand-painted panel displays irregular pigment application and bleed, which is a characteristic feature of the handmade batik process rather than a defect. All items exhibit creasing and folding consistent with bulk storage in a box. No significant staining, holes, or large tears are visible on the upper layers shown in the photograph.
