Lot 204: A Group of Ironstone Tableware in the Imari Style

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A group of glazed ironstone ceramic vessels, including two vases and four jugs of varying sizes and profiles. The collection is decorated in the traditional Imari palette, featuring a pattern of floral sprays and foliage in underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and pink enamels. The designs include stylised peonies and scrolling leaves, accented with hand-painted gilding to the foliage, scalloped rims, and handles. The group consists of a large waisted vase with a flared rim, a large bulbous pitcher with a faceted body, three creamers of varying sizes including a small hydra-style jug, and a small flared vase. While the pattern and forms are characteristic of late 19th or early 20th-century English ironstone, such as the Mandalay pattern, the bases of these pieces are not visible to confirm a maker’s mark. The pieces are finished with a clear glaze over a white earthenware body.

Condition report:

The collection shows signs of significant age and use. All pieces exhibit all-over crazing to the glaze (photo 1). Staining is present within the crazing, particularly visible on the interior of the small flared vase and the creamers. The gilding to the rims and handles shows substantial rubbing and loss across all items. No chips, cracks, or repairs are visible from the primary angle, though the heavy crazing indicates a fragile glaze surface.
