The collection includes two cylindrical terracotta wine coolers, each featuring a black-printed oval cartouche on the body reading THE ORIGINAL SUFFOLK / WINE / COOLER / Ideal for Use at Home / or on Safari / MADE BY / HENRY WATSON POTTERY / ENGLAND / Founded 1800. The collection further comprises two large, wide-mouthed stoneware storage jars finished in a two-tone salt glaze, with a mustard-brown upper section over a cream-coloured lower body. Also included is a horizontal, oval-sectioned stoneware bed warmer finished in a uniform tan glaze, featuring a top-mounted screw-in stoneware stopper. The lot is completed by a rectangular terracotta bonsai planter with a flared, stepped rim and a dark green-brown glazed exterior.
Condition report:
The terracotta wine coolers show internal soil residue and staining consistent with use as planters (photo 2). One of the large salt-glazed stoneware jars has a significant surface chip to the shoulder, approximately 3cm in width, exposing the underlying clay body (photo 1). The stoneware bed warmer exhibits overall glaze crazing and minor surface scratches (photo 1). The bonsai planter shows minor chips to the glazed rim and contains dried soil residue (photo 1). General surface dirt and minor firing imperfections are present across all pieces consistent with age and utility.
