Lot 133: A Pair of Brass and Iron Miners Safety Lamps

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of vintage miners safety lamps, also known as Davy or flame safety lamps. The lamps are constructed with ferrous iron or steel chimneys and brass collars, bases, and vertical support rods. Each lamp features a cylindrical glass combustion chamber protected by the brass cage. The upper chimneys are perforated with ventilation holes and are surmounted by iron caps with heavy gauge wire carrying handles and hanging hooks. The central brass collar of one lamp is stamped with the digits 3, 9, 1, and 5. There are other small impressed marks on the brass components which are not legible. The lamps are assembled with a combination of rivets and threaded fittings.

Condition report:

Both lamps exhibit heavy signs of industrial use and age. The upper lamp shows significant surface oxidation and deep pitting to the iron chimney and cap (photo 1). The brass components on both examples display a dark, aged patina with areas of verdigris and surface scratching. The glass cylinders appear intact without visible cracks or chips but are obscured by internal dust and carbon residue. Mechanical parts, including the fuel vessels and wick adjusters, have not been tested and may be seized due to corrosion.
