Lot 132: A Full Sized Violin with Two Piece Spruce Top and Maple Back

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A full-sized violin constructed with a two-piece spruce top featuring a fine, straight grain. The two-piece back is crafted from maple with a mild horizontal flame, complemented by matching maple ribs and scroll. The fingerboard and tailpiece are composed of ebony or a similar darkened hardwood. The instrument is fitted with four dark hardwood tuning pegs and a tailpiece that retains two fine tuners. The violin lacks a bridge and strings, with only a fragment of a single string remaining. No internal labels or maker’s marks are visible through the f-holes. A small orange adhesive label reading 132 is attached to the upper left bout of the spruce top, and a white adhesive label reading 7 is positioned nearby.

Condition report:

The instrument is in a state of significant disrepair and is suitable for restoration or parts. There is a significant open crack on the lower right bout of the spruce top (photo 1). The purfling is damaged and missing in several sections along the edges, particularly on the lower bouts (photo 1). The varnish shows extensive wear, scratching, and darkening, particularly around the bridge area and the f-holes (photo 1). There are numerous nicks and chips to the wood at the edges and on the scroll (photo 1). The bridge and soundpost are missing, and three strings are absent (photo 1).
