Lot 11: A Pair of Antique Copper and Brass Coal Scuttles
A pair of antique fireside accessories comprising a helmet-shaped coal scuttle and a round cauldron-style coal bucket. Both vessels are constructed from shaped and hammered sheet copper with an aged dark brown patina. The helmet-shaped scuttle features a fixed tubular brass overhead handle and a smaller secondary brass handgrip at the rear, both secured with cast brass decorative foliate-style mounts. The cauldron-style bucket is fitted with a heavy, curved brass overhead handle attached via riveted brass bracket mounts, along with a smaller brass loop handle to the side. Both pieces include cast brass components and display evidence of traditional construction with visible rivets. The interiors show darkening and residue consistent with historical use for coal storage. No maker marks, stamps, or hallmarks are visible on the exterior surfaces or fittings of either item.
Condition report:
Both items exhibit signs of significant age and domestic use. The copper bodies show widespread surface oxidation, natural tarnishing, and areas of light verdigris, particularly around the brass fittings (photo 1). There are numerous small dents and surface scratches consistent with handling, notably around the base rims and lower sections of the bodies (photo 1). The brass handles and mounts show surface wear and age-related patination. The interiors are darkened with residue from use.
