Lot 589: A Victorian Carved Mahogany Ribband-Back Armchair
A Victorian mahogany armchair in the Chippendale revival style. The chair features a highly ornate openwork back with a central pierced and carved ribband splat, displaying scrolling foliage and a ribbon-tie motif. The shaped top rail is finished with carved acanthus-style ears. The curved armrests terminate in scrolled hand grips on swept supports. The drop-in seat is upholstered in a cream-coloured fabric with a repeating diamond lattice pattern. The chair is supported by cabriole front legs with carved knees and ball-and-claw feet, while the rear raked legs are square in section and connected by an H-shaped stretcher. No maker marks, stamps, or labels are visible on the surfaces of the chair.
Condition report:
The piece shows signs of age and regular use. There is significant finish wear and scuffing visible on the H-stretcher and the lower portions of the legs, particularly the front right leg (photo 1). The mahogany surface shows various minor surface scratches, small indentations, and areas of dulled patina consistent with household use (photo 1). The upholstery appears to be in fair condition, though there is some light surface soiling and localized staining visible on the seat cushion (photo 1). The frame appears structurally sound.
