Lot 551: A Pair of Late Victorian Stained Hardwood and Cane Side Chairs

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of late Victorian stained hardwood side chairs, suitable for bedroom or occasional use. Each chair is constructed with a rectangular seat frame inset with a hand-woven rattan cane panel. The backrests feature square-sectioned uprights joined by two curved horizontal rails. The understructures are composed of turned front legs with ring and bobbin detailing, supported by a turned H-pattern stretcher and plain square-sectioned rear legs. The chairs exhibit differing finish tones, with one presented in a medium-light brown stain and the other in a darker reddish-brown. A small white rectangular label is affixed to the top back rail of each chair, printed with the digits 1 2. No maker’s marks, stamps, or manufacturer labels are visible on the frames or understructures. An orange adhesive label is visible on the adjacent table top with the handwritten digits 5 5 1.

Condition report:

The chairs show signs of age and regular use, with scattered surface scuffs, scratches, and minor abrasions to the wood finish, particularly visible on the legs and back rails (main photo). The cane seat of the lighter-toned chair appears relatively taut and light in colour. The cane seat of the darker chair shows significant age-related darkening and slight sagging, though the weaving remains intact without visible breaks (main photo). The difference in wood stain suggests the pair may have been finished at different times or one chair has been previously refinished.
