Lot 191: Collection of HU, BE, TW, and UK Stamps and FDCs in Vintage Albums
An assortment of mid-20th-century stamp albums and philatelic material containing issues from Europe, Asia, and the United Kingdom. The collection includes two primary red cloth-bound albums and additional stock sheets housed in binders. One album features the gold-embossed title The COMET STAMP ALBUM DE LUXE with an illustration of a biplane on the front cover. A small orange adhesive label bearing the hand-written number 191 is present on the upper left of the cover.
The Hungary section includes the 1953 Népstadion sports commemorative set, Scott #1037-1046, depicting swimming, diving, and cycling, alongside various mid-century definitives with circular date stamp cancellations. The Belgium pages feature King Albert and Leopold III portraits, the 1932 Prof. Piccard high-altitude balloon issue, and the 1935 Brussels International Exposition set, Scott #267-272.
The lot also contains Republic of China (Taiwan) stock sheets with landscape and aeronautical designs. Postal history includes a 1969 United Kingdom Investiture of the Prince of Wales first day cover, SG 802-806, and a 1973 Isle of Man Europa first day cover, Scott #24-26. A printed inscription on the right margin of one album leaf reads PEERLESS SERIES PRINTED AND MADE IN ENGLAND.
Condition report:
The Comet album shows significant wear to the red cloth covers, including fading, edge rubbing, and a partially frayed spine (photo 1). Internal pages show multiple stamps hinged to the leaves (photo 3). The Hungary page contains several loose and overlapping stamps, with many used examples bearing heavy circular date stamp cancellations (photo 2). The first day covers exhibit minor edge toning and light handling marks but remain intact (photo 4). Mixed condition throughout, comprising mint hinged and postally used issues with varying centering.
