Lot 89: A Collection of Assorted Ceramic Pitchers and Jugs
A collection of assorted ceramic jugs and pitchers of varying styles and techniques. The group includes an ornate lead-glazed earthenware ewer featuring high-relief foliate and scroll moulding finished in burgundy, emerald green, and ochre glazes. A vibrant orange adhesive label bearing the handwritten number 29 is applied to the body. A two-tone glazed earthenware jug with a matching ceramic stopper, finished with a vibrant green upper section and cream-coloured lower section, features a circular transfer-printed panel depicting a dog’s head. This piece bears an orange adhesive label reading 29 and a white adhesive label reading 4. A cylindrical stoneware jar with a small loop handle exhibits a two-tone salt glaze in ochre-brown and buff tones, carrying a white adhesive label reading 4. An earthenware pitcher with a wide mouth and thick loop handle displays a blue sponged or mottled exterior glaze and a dark reddish-brown interior glaze, with a white adhesive label reading 4. The collection is completed by a large white porcelain pitcher with a scalloped rim and scrolled handle, decorated with a blue floral transfer print featuring a central bloom and scrolling foliage, bearing a white adhesive label reading 4 on the handle. No factory marks or country-of-origin marks are visible on any of the pieces from the provided angles.
Condition report:
The relief-molded ewer shows several small chips and glaze flakes to the high points of the decorative moulding and around the pouring lip (photo 1). The two-tone stoneware jar displays general surface wear and minor pitting to the glaze consistent with utilitarian use (photo 1). The blue spongeware pitcher exhibits some light surface scratches (photo 1). The large floral pitcher shows significant dark staining and visible crazing to the interior base (photo 1). The green and cream jug appears to be in good order with its matching stopper present.
