Lot 88: Two large late Victorian style decorative ceramic vessels
A pair of large decorative ceramic vessels of late 19th or early 20th-century design. The first is an earthenware jug featuring a bulbous body, a flared scalloped rim, and an ornate scrolled handle. The exterior is finished in a blended colour-wash glaze transitioning from pale green at the rim through a cream centre to a soft pink base. It is decorated with a transfer-printed floral bouquet of roses in shades of pink, white, and burgundy, with remnants of gilded highlights to the rim and handle. A white rectangular adhesive label printed with the character 4 and an orange rectangular adhesive label printed with the characters 88 are affixed to the shoulder. The second vessel is a large urn-form vase with two foliate C-scroll handles and a ruffled rim, resting on a flared pedestal base. The exterior features a gradient glaze from forest green at the base to peach at the neck, which is decorated with embossed bead-like moulding. The body displays a large transfer-printed pastoral scene depicting two shepherdesses and sheep within a scrolled cartouche. Gilded highlights are present on the handles and rim. A white rectangular adhesive label printed with the character 4 is affixed to the shoulder, and an orange rectangular adhesive label printed with the characters 88 is present on the neck. No manufacturer names, factory backstamps, or country of origin marks are visible on either piece.
Condition report:
Both items exhibit extensive fine crazing to the glaze across their entire bodies (photo 1). Significant rubbing and wear are evident to the gilded finishes on the handles, rims, and base areas of both vessels (photo 1). No chips, cracks, or visible repairs are apparent from the provided image.
