Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of Victorian George Jones earthenware tureens with matching stands, decorated in the brown transfer-printed Caius pattern. The set consists of a larger oval vegetable tureen and a smaller sauce tureen, both accompanied by their original stands and lids. Each vessel features twin scrolled handles and a fitted lid topped with a scrolled finial. The lid of the smaller sauce tureen is designed with a notch to accommodate a ladle. The Aesthetic Movement decoration depicts stylized chrysanthemums, bamboo stalks, and geometric diaper panels interspersed with pseudo-Asian characters. A repeating geometric scroll and pendant border finishes the rims of the tureens and the edges of the stands. The underside of the stand bears a printed brown mark featuring the word CAIUS in a serif font positioned above an intertwined monogram of the letters G and J. An impressed numeral 3 is located to the left of the printed mark. One piece retains a handwritten white tag stating GEORGE JONES / CAIUS / (c 1861-73) / SAUCE TUREEN ON STAND. The lids also bear white adhesive inventory stickers printed with the number 22 and an orange sticker with the handwritten number 63.

Condition report:

Both tureens and their respective stands appear to be in good overall condition with no visible chips, cracks, or evidence of professional restoration (photo 1). The transfer-printed decoration remains crisp and the cream-coloured earthenware body retains a good glaze lustre. Minor surface scratches and kiln stilt marks on the undersides are present, consistent with the material and period of manufacture.
