AUGUST AUCTION

Lot 626: A Pair of Sterling Silver and Turquoise Guilloche Enamel Dressing Table Brushes Birmingham 1936

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A matching two-piece dressing table set comprising a handled hairbrush and a rectangular clothes brush. Each piece features sterling silver mounts decorated with translucent turquoise blue enamel over an engine-turned guilloche ground, with the pattern transitioning from a fan-shaped sunburst at the base to horizontal wavy lines. The silver mount on the hairbrush handle bears a series of impressed marks on the neck (photo 3): a shield-shaped punch containing the letters A and D over B, a lion passant, an anchor, and a lowercase m in a square punch with clipped corners. The words MADE IN ENGLAND are stamped directly below. The clothes brush (photo 1) bears the same hallmark sequence on the side of the silver mount. The brushes are fitted with natural bristles set into wooden bases. Both items carry a small white rectangular adhesive label reading 17 on the enamel surface.

Condition report:

The turquoise enamel is in good overall condition with no significant chips or losses, showing only light surface scratches and minor abrasions consistent with use (photos 1 and 2). The silver mounts show moderate tarnish and light surface micro-scratching. A small indentation is visible on the rim of the hairbrush near the shoulder. The natural bristles are aged and discoloured, and the hairbrush has several loose white threads entangled in the bristles (photo 3). Adhesive auction lot stickers are present.
