Lot 597: A Victorian mahogany marble-top washstand with two drawers and lower shelf
This Victorian washstand is constructed from mahogany and features a rectangular white marble top with grey veining. The marble top is pierced with three pre-drilled holes along the rear edge, indicating it originally supported a gallery splashback. The frieze contains two drawers with lighter wood veneer faces, each fitted with an ornate brass swing handle decorated with foliate motifs. The piece is supported by four substantial turned and ringed legs, which are joined near the base by a rectangular mahogany storage shelf. Several adhesive labels are present on the piece: a white rectangular label on the front left of the marble top is inscribed TOP FRONT, and an adjacent orange rectangular label is inscribed 597. Small white adhesive labels with the printed number 2 2 are present on the drawer fronts and legs. No manufacturer marks, signatures, or stamps were observed on the exterior or accessible interior surfaces.
Condition report:
The piece shows signs of age and significant use throughout. The marble top has various surface scratches and minor greyish staining across its surface (photo 2). The three holes at the rear of the marble top confirm the loss of the original gallery splashback (photo 2). The mahogany frame and legs exhibit numerous scuffs, small dents, and areas of wear to the finish, particularly evident around the feet and the edges of the lower shelf (photo 1). The brass drawer pulls show a natural dark aged patina.
