Lot 50: A Set of Four Graduated French-Labelled Ceramic Kitchen Canisters with Fruit Decoration
A set of four graduated kitchen canisters crafted from earthenware with a cream-coloured, speckled oatmeal glaze. Each vessel features a bulbous ovoid body tapering to a slightly flared foot, with matching domed lids topped by spherical finials. The bodies are decorated with transfer-printed polychrome fruit motifs depicting pears, plums, and grapes amongst blossoms and green foliage. The rims of the canisters and lids, as well as the finials, are finished in a contrasting deep pinkish-red glaze. Each piece is marked on the front with a black cursive script label: Sel (Salt), Café (Coffee), Sucre (Sugar), and Poivre (Pepper). An orange adhesive price label is affixed to the lid of the Sel canister. No maker’s marks or manufacturer stamps are visible on the exterior surfaces.
Condition report:
The set is in good overall condition. There is minor rubbing to the pink glaze on the finials and rims (photo 1). Slight shelf wear is present on the underside of the foot rims. No significant chips, cracks, or repairs are visible from the primary angle (photo 1).
