Lot 498: Late 19th or Early 20th Century Stained Pine Blanket Chest
A large rectangular blanket chest of simple rustic construction, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The chest is constructed from pine finished with a dark reddish-brown stain. It features a flat-topped hinged lid with a slightly protruding moulded edge. The front panel is plain, centred with a circular brass keyhole escutcheon. The piece rests on a continuous, simple plinth base. Two adhesive labels are located on the top right-hand corner of the lid: a rectangular orange label with the printed characters 435 and a square white label with the printed character 4. No maker’s names, signatures, or other marks are visible on the exterior.
Condition report:
The chest exhibits significant surface wear consistent with age and heavy use. The top lid shows extensive scratching, scuffs, and areas of finish loss (photo 1). The front panel has multiple visible vertical scratches and general scuffing (photo 1). There is noticeable wear and chipping along the moulded edges and the plinth base (photo 1). The overall finish is aged and uneven. No key is present.
