AUGUST AUCTION

Lot 414: Victorian Slat and Corrugated Metal Steamer Trunk with Eagle Lock Co Hardware

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A rectangular flat-top steamer trunk dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The exterior is constructed from corrugated metal sheeting, finished in a brown tone, and reinforced with five longitudinal hardwood slats across the top and sides. These slats are secured by metal bands and numerous rivets. The corners are protected with metal-wrapped reinforcements. The central fastening mechanism is comprised of a brass-toned metal latch and lock plate. An impressed mark on the lower section of the lock plate reads EAGLE LOCK CO. TERRYVILLE CONN. U.S.A. in uppercase lettering. Metal fixtures for side handles are present on the ends of the chest, although the handles themselves are absent. The trunk features a heavy industrial patina throughout.

Condition report:

The trunk is in a weathered, as-found condition. There is significant surface rust and oxidation visible across the corrugated metal body and the metal reinforcement bands (photo 1). The hardwood slats show scuffs, scratches, and age-related wear consistent with heavy use. Both leather side handles are missing from their metal mounts (photo 1). The interior of the chest is not visible in the provided image.
