Lot 30: A Pair of Antique Brass and Black Lacquered Field Glasses
This pair of antique field glasses features a classic twin-barrel design with a central bridge construction. The instrument is made of brass, showing traces of an original black lacquer finish on the bridge, focusing mechanism, and eyepiece frames. A central knurled thumbwheel adjusts the focus via a screw-thread post. The flared eyepieces are constructed from a dark, composite material. The objective lenses are set into tapered brass barrels. A circular inscription is present on the top rim of each eyepiece; however, the characters are heavily worn and are not legible as a name or location.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of heavy use and significant cosmetic wear. There is substantial loss to the black lacquered finish across all metal surfaces, and the exposed brass barrels exhibit heavy mottled oxidation and surface pitting (photo 1). The optical lenses are present but have not been checked for internal clarity. The mechanical operation of the focusing wheel is untested. No carrying case is included.
