Lot 281: Three Victorian Earthenware Items Including a Queen Victoria Commemorative Mug and a Copper Lustre Jug
This lot contains three decorative earthenware items from the late 19th century. The first item is a straight-sided commemorative mug with a simple loop handle and a gilded rim. It features black transfer-printed decoration including a central portrait of Queen Victoria in a widow’s veil, flanked by floral sprays of roses, thistles, and shamrocks. The upper rim is inscribed COLTON PARISH JUBILEE and a scroll at the base reads For the Queen’s Jubilee 1897. The base features a printed black mark comprising a winged crown above a knotted rope device; the letter J appears above the knot, the letters H and P are within the loops, and R & Co. is printed below. To the right of this device is the word JUBILEE above a rectangular cartouche containing the registration mark Rd. No. 63584. A small white adhesive label reading 25 is attached to the rim.
The second item is a copper lustre jug with a bulbous body, a scrolled handle, and a wide, shaped spout. The piece is finished in a continuous metallic copper lustre glaze over relief-molded decoration depicting a series of classical putti or cherubs in various poses. An orange adhesive label reading 281 is attached to the body.
The third item is a straight-sided earthenware mug decorated with blue transfer-printed topographical and floral designs. The patterns include circular vignettes depicting foreign ports, with banners below reading ADEN and SOODAN in an archaic spelling. These scenes are set within a field of floral swags and scrolling foliage. An orange adhesive sticker is applied to the rim.
Condition report:
The Queen Victoria commemorative mug shows significant all-over crazing to the glaze and a prominent vertical hairline crack extending from the rim down into the body, clearly visible near the handle and internally (photo 2, 3, and 4). There is also moderate rubbing and loss to the gilded rim. The copper lustre jug appears in good condition with only minor surface scratches and small areas of rubbing to the lustre on the high points of the relief molding (photo 1). The blue and white topographical mug shows fine all-over crazing consistent with age (photo 1).
