Lot 27: An ornate chased white metal lidded ewer with floral and foliate scrollwork
A chased white metal lidded jug or ewer, likely constructed from tinned copper or brass. The body and lid are decorated with dense hand-chased ornamentation featuring scrolling foliate and floral arabesques arranged within lobed medallions. These motifs are set against a background of fine, cross-hatched diaper-pattern engraving. The recessed areas of the design have been darkened to provide contrast against the polished raised surfaces. The vessel features a curved handle and a hinged, domed lid surmounted by a small spherical finial. A white rectangular adhesive label is applied to the body, printed with the numbers 19 19. A bright orange adhesive label is adhered to the lid, hand-marked with the number 27. No further marks, signatures, or hallmarks are visible on the exterior surfaces.
Condition report:
The jug shows moderate surface wear consistent with age and use. There is significant loss to the silver-toned finish on the handle, revealing a yellowish base metal beneath (photo 1). The lid and body have two modern adhesive labels that will require removal (photo 1). No dents, cracks, or repairs are visible from the provided angle.
