Lot 247: J. Hardman and W.F. Aspden, Two Framed Silver Gelatin Prints of Lake District Scenes including The Sun Inn, Coniston
Two framed black and white silver gelatin prints depicting Lake District subjects. The first photograph captures a hunt meet with riders and hounds gathered outside The Sun Inn, Coniston. The image is inscribed in pencil at the lower right corner “The Sun Inn, Coniston”. Attached to the reverse is a rectangular printed paper label for “W.F. ASPDEN ARTIST, PHOTOGRAPHER, PICTURE FRAME MAKER, FINE ART DEALER, 26, MARKET STREET, ULVERSTON.” The second photograph is a landscape study of a Cumbrian fell with birch trees in the foreground, signed in the lower right corner in pencil “J. Hardman” for the photographer Joseph Hardman (1891–1972). Both prints are mounted and housed in dark wood frames under glass. The frame for the hunt scene includes a gilt inner slip. Each frame bears a white adhesive label reading “4” on the glass, and the landscape frame has an additional orange adhesive label reading “247”.
Condition report:
The silver gelatin prints are in good condition with no significant silver mirroring or foxing visible. There is some light age-related discoloration and minor staining to the cream-coloured mounts (photo 1). The frames show minor shelf wear and have contemporary lot and price stickers adhered to the glass (photo 1).
