Lot 235: British School, Mid-20th Century, Lake District Landscape in Watercolour and Gouache
A mid-20th-century landscape painting executed in watercolour and gouache on paper. The composition depicts a stark, leafless tree in the foreground set against a tranquil lake and snow-dusted, craggy mountains, characteristic of the English Lake District topography, specifically resembling the view of Great Gable from Wastwater. The work is rendered in a modernist style, utilising broad, layered washes and graphic, simplified forms for the tree and rocky outcrop in the lower right. The painting is presented in a simple wooden frame with a distressed white-painted finish and a visible inner mount. Faint marks are present in the bottom right corner which appear to be a signature, however, these are not legible as a name. A white adhesive label in the top left corner bears the printed characters HNESS 138. An orange adhesive label in the top right bears the number 235, and a small white adhesive label below it bears the number 18.
Condition report:
The paper substrate shows significant overall toning and yellowing, with some fading to the watercolour pigments (photo 1). The white-painted wooden frame exhibits minor chipping and wear to the surface (photo 1). Multiple adhesive labels are present on the glass and frame (photo 1).
