Lot 184: A Collection of Cumbrian Topographical and Furness Railway Interest Postcards and Ephemera

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

An extensive collection of early to mid-20th-century postcards, photographs, and related ephemera, primarily focused on the local history of Cumbria, the Lake District, and maritime and railway subjects. The collection features a significant quantity of material relating to the Furness Railway, with several items and protective sleeves bearing the printed text THE FURNESS RAILWAY or FURNESS RAILWAY LOCO. Included is a black and white Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) depicting a rural railway station with passengers, and a colour topographical postcard of Furness Abbey. The maritime interest is represented by items such as a group photograph on a ship’s deck and an original pen and ink sketch of a large vessel’s hull in dry dock, which bears the handwritten inscription Vulkan Stettin 1910 in black ink. The items are organised using card dividers and plastic sleeves within a cardboard storage box.

Condition report:

The collection is in a generally good state of preservation for its age, showing typical signs of handling including light edge wear, corner bumping, and minor toning (photo 1 and 2). Many individual pieces are protected within plastic sleeves. A prominent Real Photo Postcard of a railway station shows a small brown surface stain to the centre-left (photo 1). The cardboard storage box shows some wear.
