Lot 182: Ron Caygill, Broughton in Furness, Watercolour and Ink, 1998
A topographical watercolour with pen and ink outlines depicting the market square of Broughton-in-Furness, Cumbria. The composition features a central stone obelisk and a mature tree set against a background of terraced buildings, notably a pink-fronted house and a yellow building with a pub sign. The work is executed in a fine illustrative style with light washes and detailed ink work. The artist has signed the work diagonally in the lower right corner as Ron Caygill ’98. A title is written in the centre of the mount below the image as Broughton in Furness. The painting is presented in a cream mount with a hand-drawn ink border and is housed in a light-coloured wooden frame. There is an orange adhesive sticker reading 182 and a white square sticker reading 4 attached to the top right of the glass.
Condition report:
The paper and mount exhibit light toning and mat burn consistent with age, visible across the whole piece (photo 1). The wooden frame shows minor surface scuffs and wear to the corners and edges (photo 1). Two adhesive auction lot stickers are present on the upper right of the glass (photo 1).
