Lot 141: N. J. Duckworth, A Lakeland Farmstead, Watercolor on Paper, 1976
A watercolor on paper depicting a traditional British rural landscape featuring a cluster of stone-built cottages and outbuildings. The representational composition shows a green meadow in the foreground defined by a post-and-wire fence, leading to a farmstead with whitewashed walls and slate roofs. The buildings are set against a backdrop of rolling verdant hills beneath a soft, cloud-filled sky. The work is signed in the lower left corner in dark pigment with the characters N J Duckworth above the digits 76. The painting is housed behind glass within a wide cream-coloured mount and a simple light-toned wooden frame. A rectangular orange adhesive label reading 141 is affixed to the lower right corner of the frame, and a small white adhesive label reading 4 is attached to the upper right corner of the mount.
Condition report:
The watercolor shows visible overall toning to the paper support (photo 1). There is minor discolouration and evidence of spotting or light foxing to the cream mount, particularly visible along the inner edges (photo 1). The wooden frame displays light surface wear, including minor scuffs and small nicks to the edges (photo 1). Internal reflections from the photography lighting are visible on the glazing.
