Lot 13: Two large glazed earthenware storage crocks
Two large hand-thrown ceramic storage crocks of traditional tapered cylindrical form, each featuring twin lug handles. The first vessel is finished with a dark brown glaze to the upper section and interior, accented by two thin horizontal yellow slip bands at the shoulder. The lower portion reveals an unglazed buff-coloured clay body with visible throwing rings. A circular orange adhesive lot sticker is attached to the rim. The second vessel features a dark brown, near-black lustrous glaze to the upper third and interior, with the remainder of the body composed of unglazed terracotta. This piece bears a small white adhesive label on the rim with the characters C, L written in black ink, alongside an orange adhesive lot sticker printed with the number 13. No maker’s marks or capacity stamps are visible on either item.
Condition report:
The first crock shows significant chipping to the rim and a loss to one of the lug handles (photo 1). The second crock has a large vertical crack extending from the rim into the body, with several chips also present along the rim (photo 1). Both vessels exhibit general surface wear, staining, and minor pitting consistent with age and utilitarian use.
