Lot 102: A Pair of Late Victorian Earthenware Wash Jug and Basin with Bramble Decoration
This set consists of a large ceramic wash jug and a matching wash basin, both manufactured from creamy white glazed earthenware. The pieces are decorated with a multi-colour transfer-printed design featuring a naturalistic bramble motif with ripe blackberries, pink blossoms, and leaves in shades of green, yellow, and brown. The jug has a bulbous form with vertical lobing around the lower half and a scrolled handle with moulded foliate details. The basin is shallow with a wide, multi-lobed scalloped rim. A rectangular orange adhesive label printed with the number 102 and a smaller white rectangular adhesive label printed with the number 4 are attached to the rim of the basin. No maker names, factory stamps, or marks are visible on the surfaces shown in the photographs.
Condition report:
The set is in fair condition. The basin has a significant visible crack extending from the scalloped rim towards the well (photo 2). Both the jug and basin exhibit an extensive network of fine crazing throughout the glaze (photo 1 and photo 2). Several small spots of brown staining and discolouration are visible in the interior well of the basin (photo 2). The pieces show general minor surface wear consistent with age and domestic use.
