Lot 675: A Pair of Cut Crystal Decanters in a Mahogany Tantalus Case
A traditional Victorian style two-bottle tantalus set featuring a mahogany case and clear cut crystal decanters. The wooden frame is designed with shaped and scalloped sides and is equipped with a brass carrying handle. The front panel includes a brass escutcheon with a central keyhole for the locking mechanism. The set contains a pair of matching lead crystal decanters of square section with chamfered corners. Each decanter is decorated with deep-cut diamond and fan patterns to the shoulders and lower body, and is fitted with a large, multi-faceted globular ball stopper. Two small adhesive labels are attached to the wooden frame, though no inscriptions are legible. No maker marks or signatures are visible on the wood or glass elements.
Condition report:
The crystal decanters and matching stoppers are in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or internal clouding. The mahogany case shows a good colour and patina with minor surface scuffs, scratches, and light edge wear consistent with age and domestic use. The brass handle and escutcheon show light tarnishing. Note that no key is present to confirm the functionality of the locking mechanism.
