Lot 66: A Pair of Victorian Majolica Putto Spill Holders

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of Victorian majolica glazed ceramic figurines. Each piece depicts a putto or cherub figure standing beside a large, cobalt blue trumpet shaped flower that functions as a small vase or spill holder. The flower stems are modelled as yellow and brown woven baskets decorated with green leaves and grape clusters. The cherub figures are partially draped with green sashes and stand on irregular, earth toned bases with green and yellow accents. The items feature the vibrant, translucent lead glazes characteristic of the majolica tradition. No impressed or painted maker marks, factory stamps, or signatures are visible. Both figurines bear small, rectangular white adhesive labels on their bases with the printed number 14.

Condition report:

The pair exhibits signs of age and significant damage to one figure. The upper figurine, as oriented in the primary image, has a significant break and loss to the left arm at the elbow. There are small chips visible on the rim of the blue flower and around the lower edge of the base on this piece. The second figurine appears largely intact, with a possible small chip to the rim of the blue flower. Both pieces exhibit fine, overall crazing to the glaze, which is typical for earthenware of this period, along with minor manufacturing glaze skips and pinholes.
