Lot 647: Late Victorian Mahogany and Cane Metamorphic Library Chair
A mahogany metamorphic library chair designed to convert from an armchair into a set of four steps. The chair features a rectangular back inset with a woven cane panel within a moulded frame. It is constructed with curved arms terminating in scrolled handrests and stands on turned front legs with splayed rear legs. The seat is upholstered in a terracotta-coloured fabric decorated with a repeating cream foliate and diamond pattern, finished with a decorative braided gimp trim. The piece is fitted with brass hinges on the seat and back uprights which allow the top section to fold over and form the steps.
Condition report:
The mahogany frame shows signs of age-appropriate wear, including surface scuffs, scratches, and minor indentations, particularly to the arms and the lower sections of the legs. The woven cane paneling is in good, taut condition with no visible breaks. The upholstery is a later replacement and remains in clean condition. The brass hinges exhibit a natural aged patina and are functional.
