Lot 63: Victorian Staffordshire Pottery Figure of a Hunter with Hounds
A Victorian Staffordshire pottery group figure depicting a huntsman with two hounds. The central figure is dressed in a black top hat, a cobalt blue frock coat over a yellow waistcoat, and orange-red breeches, holding a brown-painted fowling piece across his chest. He is accompanied by two spotted hunting dogs; one smaller white hound with black spots at his feet and a larger brown-spotted hound standing on a raised section of the base. The group is positioned in front of a small bocage tree featuring red and blue accents, set on a textured green base. The piece is constructed from lead-glazed earthenware with hand-painted overglaze enamel decoration. Two small contemporary adhesive labels are present on the upper surface of the base. No maker marks are visible.
Condition report:
The figure shows extensive fine crazing to the glaze. There are several small areas of wear and minor loss to the overglaze enamel decoration, most notably on the black spots of the lower dog and the edges of the tree foliage. A small area of roughness at the tip of the rifle barrel appears to be a minor old chip or a manufacturing irregularity. No significant cracks or major restorations are apparent.
