Lot 606: George III Mahogany Mule Chest
A George III mahogany mule chest featuring a rectangular hinged lid that opens to a large internal storage area. The front panel is decorated with highly figured flame mahogany veneers. A single full-width drawer is located at the base, fitted with twin brass swan-neck handles and shaped backplates. The chest and drawer both feature central brass escutcheons. The whole is supported by four turned bun feet. The piece exhibits traditional construction with hand-cut dovetails visible on the drawer.
Condition report:
The chest is in well-used country house condition and requires restoration. The lid shows heavy surface wear, including multiple deep scratches, finish loss, and several white paint splatters. There is a prominent dark circular stain or repair around the upper lock plate on the front panel. General scuffing and small chips are visible to the edges, corners, and the feet. The brass hardware has a heavy aged patina. No key is present.
