Lot 581: A 17th Century Charles II Carved Oak Coffer

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A joined oak coffer dating from the 17th century, consistent with the Charles II period. The piece is of panelled construction featuring a four-panel front, each section decorated with a carved lozenge motif with stylised fleur-de-lis finials at the points. The chest is assembled using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. It features a multi-panelled hinged lid and is supported by stile feet, which are an extension of the vertical corner posts. The stiles and rails have simple moulded edges. A single central keyhole is visible on the front rail. The coffer is constructed from solid oak and displays a dark, aged patina.

Condition report:

The chest shows significant signs of age and wear. A vertical split is present in the second panel from the left on the front. There are various surface scratches, scuffs, and gouges, particularly along the lower rails and feet. The finish is uneven with areas of staining and surface loss. There are minor losses to the carved mouldings. The lid exhibits some warping and does not sit completely flush with the base. Evidence of old, inactive woodworm flight holes is visible.
