Lot 578: A Pair of Mid-20th Century Wooden Produce Crates from Guernsey

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £2

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of vintage wooden shipping crates designed for the transport of agricultural goods from the Channel Islands. These crates are of nailed slat construction, characteristic of the mid-20th century horticultural trade. The crate on the left is stencilled in black ink with the text BRITISH PRODUCE and GROWN IN GUERNSEY, positioned upside down relative to the open top. This crate includes a single vertical rusted iron reinforcement strap. The crate on the right features white stencilled graphics, with BRITISH PRODUCE along the lower edge and GROWN IN GUERNSEY in an arc above. The central graphic depicts a diamond containing a cross, a representation of the Guernsey flag. Both items display significant age-related patina, surface staining, and graining. Each crate bears a modern small white adhesive lot sticker numbered 20.

Dimensions: Not measured.

Condition report:

The crates exhibit wear consistent with heavy industrial use. The wood shows weathered surfaces, staining, and some minor splitting. The metal strap on one crate is heavily oxidised. There is evidence of storage dust and minor debris. Both crates remain structurally intact.
